What asbestos-related illness can I claim for?

There is usually a significant time delay between exposure to asbestos and the development of symptoms or diagnosis, often stretching beyond 40 years.

Common asbestos related illnesses which people may be diagnosed with include:

All of these illnesses are eligible for compensation in Northern Ireland.

They can arise due to exposure in the workplace, working in a building with asbestos (such as schools and hospitals), or in some cases even by secondary exposure, such as a family member who worked with asbestos coming into the house with asbestos dust on their overalls.

As issue which often arises in these cases is the tracing of insurers for companies which are no longer trading. Thanks to our vast experience and expertise in dealing with asbestos claims in Northern Ireland, we have come across many of the places of work where asbestos exposure would’ve occurred.

We have built up a large database of corresponding insurers and we are regularly able to trace insurers where companies have long ceased trading, securing settlement when many couldn’t.

Am I at Risk?

If you have been exposed to asbestos at any stage in your working life, there is a risk that you could develop deadly mesothelioma or other conditions such as asbestos related lung cancer, asbestosis or pleural plaques.

These conditions often exist without symptoms of lung problems until very late on. If you suspect you have worked with asbestos in any capacity, we would always recommend seeking further medical treatment.

If you’ve been diagnosed with an asbestos related disease or believe you may have one, speak to one of our leading solicitors today for advice regarding a compensation claim.

Are There Time Limits?

A general rule of thumb is that you have 3 years from when you were diagnosed.

If a loved one has died as result of their asbestos exposure, you have 3 years from when you discovered asbestos was the cause.
