What is Asbestosis?
Asbestosis is a serious condition caused by exposure to large amounts of asbestos dust.
It is often used as a catch-all for any type of asbestos related disease, but strictly speaking it is a standalone disease.
It differs from some of the other asbestos-related diseases as studies have shown that you must have been exposed to large amounts of asbestos for this to develop.
Asbestosis can make it difficult for your lungs to work properly and it takes an average of 20 – 30 years following your exposure to develop.
Unfortunately, the effects are irreversible.
Some symptoms to watch out for include:
- Shortness of breath
- Tiredness
- A persistent cough
- Wheezing
- Pain in your chest or shoulders

How is Asbestosis Diagnosed?
Following your referral to a Chest Consultant, they will normally recommend you undergo investigations like x-rays and a CT Scan.
If your initial x-ray shows shadowing, this may be a sign of asbestosis. Inhaling asbestos causes scarring on your lungs, also known as ‘fibrosis’.
To get a better idea a CT scan may be ordered. This takes pictures of the inside of your lungs and assists them in making a diagnosis.
Can Asbestosis Be Treated?
There is a common view that asbestosis is cancer. This is not the case.
A big worry for those diagnosed with asbestosis is that they can go on to develop the more serious and deadly asbestos related lung cancer or mesothelioma.
It is important to get regularly tested and keep an eye on your symptoms.
